What is a Verger?

Vergers are lay persons who assist clergy in planning and conducting worship services, and are used by many churches throughout the ACNA.  Though their roles vary by church, they generally help organize acolytes, lay readers, and lay eucharistic ministers during a service.  They ensure the proper readings for the day are in place, assist with the distribution of Communion, and are on hand to step in and deal with any issues that might otherwise occupy the attention of the clergy. They serve at weekly Sunday services as well as weddings and funerals.

Ultimately, a Verger’s job is to have their eyes on all of the little details that go into conducing worship so that the clergy are free to focus on their job of nourishing God’s people in Word and Sacrament.

It is our hope over the next few months to begin compiling verger resources from around the province in this space.  From customaries to acolyte manuals, it is our goal to build a compendium of resources that will help improve the ministries of vergers throughout the ACNA.
